Global Big Day and October Big Day 2026

This year we had two major international birdwatching events, held twice a year: the first in May, called Global Big Day, and the second in October, known as October Big Day. Both are organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in the United States through the eBird platform.

Their main objective is to bring together birdwatchers from around the world to record as many species as possible in a single day. These citizen science events help us better understand bird distribution, populations, and habitats.

Ecologística Perú participated in the organization and logistics of these two pelagic expeditions, with support from PROMPERU for the first and from MINCETUR for the second.

Both expeditions departed from the Arequipa region and from the town of Chala, located 610 kilometers from Lima. The teams consisted of ornithologists (birdwatchers) and bird and nature photographers.

Between 10 and 20 pelagic species, including 5 albatross species, were recorded over the two days. Two great adventures that yielded fantastic records and observations!
